Every country has its own state symbols – a flag, a coat of arms, and an anthem.
Our country also has such symbols.
The flag of Ukraine is a blue and yellow banner.
Its colors mean the sky and a wheat field.
The coat of arms of Ukraine is a golden trident on a blue background.
It is a symbol of power.
You can see the coat of arms on money.
The anthem of Ukraine "Ще не вмерла України і слава, і воля" –
is a special song for the country.
People listen to the anthem standing and quietly.
This special song is played before state holidays,
sports competitions and more.

The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv.
It is a beautiful modern city.
There are many parks, museums, and different monuments here.
The main street of Kyiv is Khreshchatyk.
Just imagine, there used to be a deep ravine with a stream where this street is now.
Do you know who founded Kyiv?
Long ago, people called Poliany lived in our country.
Among them were three brothers:
the warrior and defender Kyi,
the hunter Schek,
the farmer Khoriv
and their sister Lybid.
On the hills of the Dnipro, they built a city and named it Kyiv after the oldest brother Kyi.
In Kyiv, there are monuments for the brothers and their sister.
You can see one of them when you walk along the Dnipro embankment.
And the second monument-fountain is on the main square of Kyiv – Independence Square.

Where did they live and what did they do?
Cossacks were soldiers who protected their native land.
They lived in a strong wooden fortress on islands in the Dnipro.
That place was called Zaporizka Sich.
A Cossack's house was called "курінь".
Cossacks wore bright clothes and a special hairstyle – "оселедець".
On a special Square, future warriors learned to use a saber,
ride a horse and shoot with a bow and cannon.
Cossacks made musical instruments and played the kobza, tympani, and trumpet.
In their free time, Cossacks held competitions where they showed their fighting skills.
One of these competitions was the dance «Гопак».
To move on water, they built a strong and fast boat,
which they called «Чайка».

Let's look at the calendar and find out which state holidays Ukrainians celebrate in summer and autumn.
At the start of summer, on June 28, is Constitution Day of Ukraine.
The Constitution is the main law of the country that people live by.
At the end of summer, on August 24, is Independence Day of Ukraine –
this is the birthday of the country.
In the middle of autumn, on October 1, is the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks,
and also the Day of Defenders and Defendresses of Ukraine.
Cossacks exist even today.
These are our hero-soldiers who keep protecting our Homeland.
