If you call someone very loudly, for example:

you can notice that the word is made of parts.
These parts are called syllables.
You can find how many syllables are in a word by holding your hand under your chin.
How many times your chin touches your hand, that's how many syllables are in the word.
For example:
«ка-ли-на».
The word «калина» has three syllables.
One of the syllables in a word is said with a stronger voice.
This syllable is called stressed.
«Ка-ли-на».
In the word «калина» the second syllable is stressed.
The stress in a word is shown with a slanted line.

Words are made of sounds.
For example, the word «оса» is made of sounds

In Ukrainian, sounds are divided into vowels and consonants.
Vowel sounds are made only with the voice.
When you say vowel sounds, air goes out freely through your mouth, without any stops.
Note: the number of vowel sounds in a word is the same as the number of syllables.
In Ukrainian, there are six vowel sounds –

In writing, sounds are shown with letters, and in a sound scheme – with circles.
Consonant sounds are made with the voice and noise or only noise.
Consonant sounds can be hard or soft.
Hard consonant sounds in a sound scheme are shown with one line.
This line shows a stop that air meets when you say these sounds.
Soft consonant sounds are shown with two lines.
